Summary in English

Clinical Drug Research Graduate School (CDRGS) is a Finnish organisation for PhD student education. The aim of CDRGS is to educate scientific specialist for planning, management and critical evaluation of clinical drug research in various fields of the society.

Drugs in research

CDRGS was founded 1995 and since then this national graduate school has had cooperation with universities in Helsinki, Kuopio, Tampere, Turku and Oulu in addition to university central hospitals, pharmaceutical industry and Finnish Medicines Agency. CDRGS is supported by Ministry of Education. Some research projects are also supported by Academy of Finland and Finnish Funding Agency for Technology and Innovation (TEKES). The chairman of CDRGS is Pertti Neuvonen, Professor in Clinical Pharmacology, University of Helsinki.

To educate GCP (Good Clinical Practice) level professional scientists, the doctoral students study theoretical, professional skills and perform relevant research to achieve PhD degree within four years. The lack of professional clinical pharmacologists has, for example, caused delays in pharmaceutical drug development.

Since clinical drug research is under strict regulations, it requires relevant education to perform the research properly and to take into account the patient safety.

At the moment there are five "official" positions in the graduate school. The salaries of these positions are granted by the Ministry of Education. In addition there are several doctoral students educating themselves within CDRGS. There are a wide range of clinical drug research groups, studying, for example, comparative efficacy of drug treatment, pharmacogenetics, drug interactions, treatment in poisonings, the effect of age and diseases on drug pharmacokinetics and efficacy, pharmacoepidemiology etc. There are more than 50 potential professor or docent level supervisors from various organisations. CDRGS organises annual courses which are open also for other participants than graduate school doctoral students.

More than 80 PhD theses have been published in CDRGS since 1995.
